Late 17th Century Carved Wood Religious Figure
A fascinating painted wood religious figure - perhaps a Saint, dating to the late 17th Century, and probably Eastern European. With a fair amount of the original colouring remaining it is a stunning piece. One hand is holding a Bible, the other detachable arm is missing. I have been told that these figures would remain in a chapel whilst their owner, complete with the detachable arm as a talisman, went off to war. I fear, in that case, that the lack of an arm on this one does not bode well for the original owner. Now mounted on a wooden stand, the sculpture measures 28cm high, 10cm wide and 3.5cm deep and is in pretty good condition, commensurate with age. The asking price includes insured postage in UK.
