Period Piranesi Engraving of Rome Vedute Di Roma
A Giovanni Battista Piranesi copper plate engraving entitled "Veduta delle due chiese, l'una detta della Madonna di Loreto, l'altra del Nome di Maria presso la colonna Trajana" ( View of the two churches, one called Santa Maria di Loreto and the other Nome di Maria, close to Trajan's Column). From Vedute di Roma (H. 66 WE 199), dated 1762. It is an etching, printed on laid paper, circa 1770-80. It is presented in good condition, commensurate with age. It was professionally cleaned and framed in the early 1990's. As stated in the V&A's description of their copy of this engraving "Piranesi's images of 'modern' Rome powerfully suggest the scale and grandeur of the churches, palaces and public buildings erected in the Renaissance and Baroque eras. But many of the views include, as well as the architectural marvels of the city, scenes of the picturesque, bustling life of the inhabitants of its streets and squares details which also had an appeal as souvenirs for visitors making the Grand Tour" The print image measures 42.5cm (16 3/4") by 69.2cm (27 1/4"), with the frame 59cm (23 1/4") by 84cm (33").
