Rare Large Liberty Planter or Log Basket c1890
A wonderful rare large Liberty & Co oak and rush Arts and Crafts planter or log basket, with original lift out steel liner and copper Liberty & Co of London label to the base. It would look fabulous with a tree fern in it! Dating to circa 1890 it is offered in good condition, commensurate with age. There are some slight markings to the top and a small amount of shrinkage splitting to the base boards which has been stabilised. It is a strong and stable piece. The rush has always been protected to the inside by the liner so is in good original condition. I haven't found any similar pieces in a Liberty catalogue so perhaps it was a special commission. I have found a similar oak and rush suite of furniture that was made by William Birch for Liberty so perhaps this was also made by Birch. Anyway it is a great piece, useful for logs, as a planter or even as a bottle store. It measures 68.5cm (27") wide, 38cm (15") deep and 53.5cm (24 1/4") high.
