Stunning Heals Arts & Crafts Golden Oak Settle

Stunning Heals Arts & Crafts Golden Oak Settle
A stunning Arts & Crafts golden oak settle or hall seat, dating to circa 1900-10. There are major similarities with pieces known to be designed by Ambrose Heal, especially the Oak Settle Chair, designed c1899. The internal arm rests, insert upholstery and curved form supports show similar traits. The sleigh stretchers are very similar to those on the Letchworth table, c1904. Both of these are illustrated in John Andrews ‘Arts And Crafts Furniture’ book. I have thus attributed its manufacture to Heals. It is, importantly, comfortable to sit in although a cushion could always be added it required! The central panel is upholstered in a Century Guild fabric designed by A H Mackmurdo. This fabric appears to be the original. The settle has canted sides so that it measures the same width at the top as at the foot on its sledge base. Offered in good condition, commensurate with age, with great colour to the timbers and a solid build. There is some slight contraction of the timbers to the seat and back and the fabric panel is slightly faded and worn but overall it really does look great! It measures 128.5cm high, 123cm wide and 41.5cm deep.
